READING ROOM AT SANJAY COLONY
2016, Sanjay Colony, Delhi, with 'The Community Library Project' by Mridula Koshy
The project was borne out of my continued partnership with 'The Community Library project', an initiative by literary activist and author Mridula Koshy that works with marginalized neighborhoods and communities. The project is situated inside a marginalized settlement in Delhi by the name of Sanjay Colony. The inhabitants here are mostly self-employed as ragpickers and waste segregators. At the moment there is no space in the neighborhood where adults can congregate or have discussions. The reading space aims to not only provide adults in the neighborhood with a chance to pick-up reading, but it also becomes a space where they can congregate, access social programs, and discuss community issues. Like the other library projects, the material used in the refurbishing this space came from re-adapting waste furniture and materials, the new furniture used here was manufactured by the carpenters trained under the Savda Ghevra Livelihoods program.
